Geographical Area

Rachana’s presence in a number of villages and hamlets in Haveli, Velhe, Junnar and Bhor Tehsils of Pune District, Maharashtra state, India, spread over a large hilly area.

Rachana used to work as a western Maharashtra convener to coordinate network activities on child rights issues in Satara, Solapur, Kolhapur, Pune, Ahmadnagar and Sangli distric.

Our Beginning and Philosophy

In the year 1989 a small group of friends with social commitment and active in Tribal people, Differently able people, Women and children development work; started exploring the idea of working in the rural environment for creating a community free from any discrimination and equal opportunity for all.

They interacted with the villagers in a hilly region of Maharashtra State in India. Similar to the rural environments in other parts of India, these villages are also far away from the process of development. The scenario for the downtrodden womenfolk and children is abysmal.

The group decided to work under a single umbrella with a focus to mobilize communities and facilitate the process of empowerment of rural women and of children with a focus on health and education areas. And with this determination, Rachana was founded. One of the founder members Ms Swati Chavan decided to work full time and is leading RACHANA as an Executive director along with a competent core team.
Rachana’s organisation work’s led by the majority of women representatives. And the village-level activities are also carried out by the majority of women grassroots workers and volunteers.
